What type of equipment do I need for a recording studio?

Posted: January 31, 2010 – 6:25 am

What type of software, mics, amps, instruments, mixers, and best type of computer do I need for a recording studio?

There are four phases.
Phase 1: Recording. This includes microphones, guitar amps, the vocals room, microphone cables, direct boxes for bass, the soundboard, pre amplifiers, compressors and instruments. The least you need is a microphone and a microphone cable.

Phase 2: Interface. This includes recording interfaces, preamps, recording devices, recording soundboards, etc. This phase translates the music into a recognizable signal for the computer or recording device which then "writes" or "records" the information. The least you need is a recording device or a computer with a usb functioning recording interface.

Phase 3: Editing. This portion involves cutting out, altering, and adding effects to the music. Mixing is also a big part of this, and a computer does the best job because of the many options and big, wide programs which do an amazing job of editing. The least you need is a program which allows you to cut out bad stuff you don’t want.

Phase 4: Monitoring. This portion is litterally monitoring how it sounds with your ears and equipment. This includes things like powered monitors, unpowered monitors and a power amp, good monitoring treated acoustically sound rooms, headphones, and computer speakers. The least you’ll need is a pair of headphones.

Ideally, you would grab a sure sm57 for instruments, sure sm58 for vocals, a usb recording interface, a computer, pro tools or some cheap recording software, a powered monitor or two, and two rooms – one room for recording, and one room for mixing and monitoring (the control room is what they call it).

Good freakin luck dude. This stuff is spendy. I would suggest purchasing a stand alone recorder with a built in mic. Cheap, effective, and you’ll know whether or not recording is something you’d want to pursue.

Does anybody know where to get cheap recording equipment?

Posted: January 31, 2010 – 6:25 am

Im trying to become a rapper but I don’t have a job yet and I don’t wanna pay for studio time. I’m only 15 and I live in Parkville,MD. When I get a job I plan to buy equipment so I can record a demo and try to get it played on the radio

recording equipment is pretty cheap these days, but not that cheap. You might want to check here for a few ideas:

http://recordingquestions.com/question/what-equipment-do-i-need-to-record-bass-guitar-tracks-on-my-computer/17

Maybe befriend someone that has recording equpment already, and offer to help them out for free in exchange for some free recording and advice.

You can try getting a loan from a parent or friend, or you can get a job. Those are about the only options at this point for you.

Getting professional results from labtop recording…?

Posted: January 31, 2010 – 6:25 am

I am wondering, can I get professional and clear audio recording from my labtop. I have upgraded the heck out of my labtop. I have a Dell Inspirion E1505 with windows XP Media Center. I have 3GB’s of RAM, a 320GB 7200RPM Western Digital harddrive in it, and Intel Core Duo 1.66 processor. I will be using Cakewalk Sonar 8 Producer Edition, and will be using a Presonus firepod 10 for recording through firewire. I will have later a 500GB portable Harddrive. What do you guys thinks. Can I get great recordings. I really don’t want to spend money on getting a desktop when i did all this to my labtop. I want to start a recording studio and be able to produce recording that sound like them from a decent studio. what do you think. Thanks

Ehh if you’re really into it, you might consider buying a higher end sound card (input device) and nice microphone. You’ll probably only find these for desktops. But most laptops and desktops come with decent equipment as is. It depends what media you’re targeting.

Edit: It is a myth that you need a Mac to do excellent audio mastering. Mac’s are essentially PCs these days anyways. Invest your money in the sound board/mic/hardware, not the Mac.

What do I need to make a homemade music studio?

Posted: January 31, 2010 – 6:25 am

I need to know everything I need to make a homemade music studio (in a bedroom). I know that I will need a microphone, but what microphone would be best? What type of recording equipment would be good to purchase? Any information that can be provided, would greatly be appreciated.

Don’t worry about the price, I’ve been through enough to know…"you get what you pay for"…and I want atleast decent quality in my recordings. It will mainly be used for vocal recording over instrumentals.

Thanks

microphone: Shure SM58 is the best vocal mic
mixer: this is what all your instruments plug in to
amplifier: takes the audio feed from the mixer and plays it out loud
a laptop with recording software installed: the best is Pro Tools, but even the basic package for that costs £200
that’s the basics, son

What equipment is needed for a home recording studio for rap. My budget is $1000. Please and Thank You.?

Posted: January 31, 2010 – 6:25 am

Ok. Forget all that say 1000$ is not enough. It’s more than enough if you have the location. Why? Because most people think it’s all about the equipment when in fact it’s not. It’s about the talent, the mixing and finally about the equipment.

You’ll manage to buy all you need for 1000$. In fact, I think you can stay in 800$ budget. I say this because I own a home studio for couple of years, and my songs are just like the ones made in big studios. Off course, there is a difference, but it’s noticeable only if you produce music and if you listen to super-high-quality monitors.

Let me make a minimum list for you:
- PC (400-500$)
- Sound Speakers (50-200$)
- Sound Card (50-100$)
- Microphone (50-150$) – I recommend AT2020
- Popfilter (10-50$)
- Microphone preamp (40-150$)
- Recording software (0-1000$)

Recording and producing software is very important, but if you are wise, you’ll learn that you can find a lot of stuff on www.torrentz.com :)

I am 13 years old, and I am an aspiring singer. I am a girl, and I want to build a recording studio?

Posted: January 31, 2010 – 6:25 am

how do I make one? I already have Philips SBC HP250 headphones, I have a Microphone, and I have a laptop….what else do i neeed. Ihave a slight budget, 140.00 dollars. I need tips..
No mean comments. I DONT want a voice mixing deck. i just need pointers….jeez

$140 is a little bit low. But you don’t need much more.

All you need is a USB Audio Interface. This will allow you to plug in your microphone and have it converted to a digital signal to get on to your laptop. Audio Interfaces also come bundled with a recording software. Here’s what I recommend:

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LinkUSB/

It comes with Tracktion which is the easiest to learn recording software.

I know you said you already have a mic, but is it a real microphone or one from Radio Shack? You might look into getting a true Dynamic or Condenser microphone to get better quality. Unfortunately one of these alone, will take you over your budget.

This isn’t the best Mic, but at least it’s a condenser Mic and will get you closer to Recording quality.

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/AT2020/

Keep in mind Audio Interfaces only take 1/4" or XLR inputs. So make sure your microphone isn’t an 1/8th"

How do i Build a basic cheap home recording studio?

Posted: January 31, 2010 – 6:25 am

me and ma bestfriend have been rapping for a while now, and we want to record our music but studio time is too expensive and we want to record whenever we feel like it. People have been saying that all we need is basic recording software on our computer, a high quality usb mic. and a pop filter. is that all we need to record. please help thanxxxx

Assembling a home studio project could represent a catchy job, and it is facile to expend a good deal of money and blow a lot of time and effort. There’s a lot assembling into an home studio than merely purchasing the equipment. What you will need for a good home studio?

* Mic Preamp
* Microphones
* Equipment
* Recording Software
