Where can I find good self recording music equipment?

Posted: July 28, 2010 – 10:56 pm

I am wanting to record myself playing a line of music. Then I want to record my self playing another line of music. After that, I want to add the two lines together to hear them play at the same time. Where can I find the equipment and what software do I need to do this. I intend to play a trumpet and other various brass instruments, and a piano.

All you need is a USB mic and some recording software:

home recording studio equipment?

Posted: July 28, 2010 – 10:55 pm

where is the best place to get recording studio equipment? i don’t want anything fancy, just the basic stuff that every artist uses. i don’t have anything right now, so i could use some suggestions on the basic stuff that artists use, where to get it, and what it does. if it helps, i have a guitar and ukulele. both are acoustic electric.
oh & this stuff is for a home studio. it’d probably be set up in my room.

Hello friend! First thing is first… before knowing where to buy it (That’s the easy part) you need to know WHAT to buy :) So here is a great little article on setting up a home studio:

http://www.audioneeds.com/forums/content.php?3-The-Startup-Studio

Also, you should seriously consider joining a community like http://www.audioneeds.com – it’s a great forum filled with sound engineers that are always asking and answering questions and discussing techniques in mixing and recording. I think it’ll help you a lot since you are interested in recording so much. :)

Good luck my friend!

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Free Bird (Music Video Synced W/Studio Recording)

Posted: July 27, 2010 – 12:32 pm

Alright, a lot more work went into this than you would think, but I guess it’s a good thing that you can’t tell just how difficult it was to create.

I feel I’ve done about as good of a job as I could to edit it together in such a way that the audio approximately matches the video.

The studio recording of Free Bird (extended ending of course) has here been overlaid atop a heavily edited version of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s 1974 Hamburg (Germany) show.

Please understand this WAS NOT EASY. The video here bares little resemblance to the original footage I used (it is presented in a MUCH different order). Obviously it is impossible to get everything to line up perfectly. Throughout the verse I focused on getting Ronnie’s lips, Gary’s slide, and Allen’s chords in sync. Throughout the solo I focused only on Allen’s playing, Gary’s chords, and Bob’s drums.

If you have not seen the original recording of the 1974 Hamburg show, I urge that you PLEASE go watch it BEFORE watching this one, so you can appreciate how much editing this required!

Original pt. 1:

Original pt. 2:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wAuR1H_0s0&feature=related

The tempo through the verse was SLOWER than studio recording, and the tempo of the solo was FASTER than the studio recording.

It was a challenge to say the least!
Enjoy!

This is for Ronnie, Allen, Leon, and Billy – we remember you!

Welcome to my home recording studio!

Posted: July 27, 2010 – 12:32 pm

A quick tour of my studio equipment. This is a great setup for beginners. I’m not gifted financially, and I don’t write and record music for a living, so this setup is convenient for my low budget spending. I know I’ll get complaints that I should be using Pro Tools because it’s industry standard. I don’t use Pro-Tools because I’m not in the music industry, and I’m not a poser either. If I got a publishing deal, and if music was my job, then I’d invest in Pro-Tools, a Macbook, and better equipment. Unfortunately, I don’t have that kind money, and I guess I’m not that talented enough for people to give me that kind of an opportunity. I’m going to make due with what I have, and so far it’s sufficient enough for me. Enjoy!

One Love,
Ivan Richard

what kind of recording equipment is best?

Posted: July 24, 2010 – 5:57 pm

my husband plays electric guitar and has been wanting to record his music. but he has nothing to do it with and doesn’t want to go spend a bunch of money to get it professionally done.
i am wanting to get him some of the basic recording equipment to get him started and be able to record for christmas. and i have no experience in this. could you please point me in the right direction, on what you think i need?
thanks

If he is JUST recording a guitar, get him a 1 or 2 channel mixer or audio interface he can plug his guitar right into a "Line input" so that he can plug the mixer into a computer via usb, firewire, or just the regular headphone output or RCA outputs into the computer’s audio input. There are free programs to record into and the one I used to use was Audacity. Just set the input in the preferences to audio input so it can know where to get it from.

If you have any other questions or I wasn’t too clear on something haha feel free to send me an email at slipknotrokr12@yahoo.com

Building a home recording studio?

Posted: July 20, 2010 – 6:16 pm

I have a vacant room that i wish to put a small recording studio in. I do not want anything flamboyant or priced really high. I just would like to go in and record my own music. Any suggestions?

I recently came across this good recording studio starter kit package and it’s at a decent price.

http://www.guitarcenter.com/Digidesign-Pro-Tools-Mbox-Mini-Package-773405-i1177445.gc

Now, it only comes with what you need to start out. Other things like a set of keys, MPC, turntable, etc, you’ll have to get all that separately. But at the price and quality of the package, it’s the way to go. I’m going to try and buy it this summer when I save up enough money and get my own place. And then get the other accessories I need.
