What is required for me to start a cheap home recording studio?

Posted: August 28, 2011 – 7:42 am

I would like to create, and setup a cheap, but still nice, home recording studio. All I am looking to do is record vocal, and acoustic covers, along with some keyboard covers. What am I going to need to do all this, and what is it going to cost me?

First Thing you need is money

MAC Semi-Precious Graphite Rock Eyes Tutorial

Posted: August 24, 2011 – 8:34 am

I recently got new recording equipment, and am in the middle of testing out a different style of video – voice-over style. In the future, I will probably be using this style when I feel my tutorials are getting too long. However it is not permanent so don’t worry, I’ll still be making face-to-face live vlog style videos and tutorials. This is just a trial.

At the time of filming this, I had been testing out a lot of different skincare products. My skin hasn’t been in the most optimum condition in reaction to this, so you might notice a bit of redness and uneven skintone. Just to inform everyone – I am still using my Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum, SKII Facial Treatment Essence and Hera skincare routine day and night, and I don’t think I’ll be deviating from this anymore for the near future.

Love you guys and hope you are all well. I am very touched by all your entries to my Lancome Mascara and Scottish Fine Soaps Gift Pack Giveaway Contest. Thanks all for entering, and don’t forget the closing date is September 12th, so you still have many chances to enter.

What should I get for recording equipment?

Posted: August 18, 2011 – 4:27 am

I’m a teenage guitarist and singer/songwriter looking to record some music, maybe even to make a demo tape at some point. I don’t have a lot of cash, and I don’t have a ton of knowledge as to how to record things and get the sound I really want. As of now I only have an SM-57 microphone and Garage Band on my Mac. What sort of programs and equipment should I get just to start me off?

i’m assuming your sm57 is XLR and not USB so you’ll need some sort of audio interface to connect your mic to your computer. if you had a USB mic, you could plug it in and play with garageband.

to quickly get started you could buy a USB mic and use garageband, or get an interface and use your mic. it depends on what you want to do.

i would recommend getting an interface because it gives you more options. you can get them for less than $100 or up to thousands upon thousands of dollars. when looking at an interface you need to think about what you want to record. if you just want to record guitar and vocals, you can do this easily with a small 2 channel input interface. if you might want to record a full band at some point including a drum kit, you’ll want more inputs. if you have a friend that plays a MIDI keyboard, you’ll have to make sure you have a MIDI input.

if you get a two input interface you can plug your guitar in, and plug the mic in and play them both together, or you can record each independently and mix them later. you can also plug the guitar directly in and then also mic the amp and mix those together for a different guitar sound. so if you are just planning on recording yourself, you can easily get something pretty cheap. just remember that if you are wanting to start a band or something and want more options down the road, you might want to go ahead and get more inputs on the interface now.

the good thing about the interface is that it will come with some recording software. you can probably still use garageband if you download a driver for the interface.

the SM57 is a great guitar mic. for vocals you might want to get an SM58 as well. for basic recording the 57 will be fine for you, but in general its not the best for vocals.

go to sites like guitarcenter.com musiciansfriend.com and sweetwater.com to check out the prices of audio interfaces. i like the mbox series because it comes with protools which is industry standard for recording. the price is a few hundred more than the others that do the same thing, so just do some research and read reviews and decide what will work for your project on your budget.
