i am building a recording and practicing studio .what is the best insulation or sound proofing for this projec

Posted: February 26, 2010 – 12:40 am

I’ve answered a few of these and please do not believe that egg crates will be effective, or at all aesthetically pleasing.

BEST is relative to your desire and budget in large measure.

Without knowing at all where the structure will be, IE: an existing room in a house, etc, you should likely bite the bullet and use Studio grade, soft cone type, foam sheets.

If you’re building everything from scratch you can begin, after studding and exterior wall install, to add 2 inch construction grade foam (used for insulation) between the studs. Install your choice of interior wall material, IE: Plywood sheathing, drywall, etc. to walls and a ceiling, then add the sound deadening studio grade foam cone sheeting.

You can add carpet for more sound deadening.

Where do I begin in starting a Recording studio?

Posted: February 22, 2010 – 9:14 pm

I honestly have no idea where to start with building a studio. I don’t have anything started yet…Just wanting to draw up some plans for a future business. Any sort of information will be greatly appreciated. Some leads to a website for finacial information something to do with all the legal work that needs to take place…Literally anything will help. Thanks

I’ve opened a studio myself. You can mix up the order depending on your budget or what you already have.
If you are looking for simple and under $100/hr style studio:
1. Get fast, powerfull computer and top end software. Practice on the software till you are familiar with all the tricks.
2. Additional equipment, rack effects, pre-amps, drum mics, vocal mics, 10 or more mic stands, studio furniture, monitors, and such.
3. Depending on the style you plan to record, design your recording room. 1 big room or multiple booths. Hardwood floors and walls are a must, with corner sound deadening materials. Stay away from hallway-shaped rooms and there IS such a thing as too much studio foam. You want natural reverb and room sound.
4. When opened, doing a lot of pro-bono work will get you a fast-growing portfolio and client list. Get in touch with local production companies and see if you can work out a deal, discounted studio time for all of their bands/artists.
****Spend more time on qualiy rather than getting customers in and out for the time they pay for. If you make them sound good, they’ll come back.
-If you’re a musician, produce your own material for examples soundclips to post on your website.

If you want to experiment with beats in your studio, I suggest Fruity loops studio, it may be complicated to use, but you can generally learn pretty quick.

http://www.flstudio.com/

The producer edition is 200$, witch is what i would recommend

If your planning on using a computer for recording (witch im sure you are.. I would also recommend you get this audio card.

http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=1&subcategory=208&product=14064&WT.cg_n=Campaigns&WT.mc_id=8826

Multiple audio inputs, witch means you dont hafto spend time buying all sorts of adapters and converters for all of your Microphone’s/Guitars ect.

here’s the same thing but built to fit a 5.25 cd drive bay

I would also reccomend some good Monitor speakers and headphones
I.e.

Or if your on a budget
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836127009

And the headphones should have good sound-cancelling technology

Again, If on a budget

All I currently have to recommend right now

can you use carpet to soundproof a home recording studio?

Posted: February 16, 2010 – 8:37 pm

I am building a recording studio in my basement. I was interested in buying the foam padding to soundproof it, but someone told me that carpet on the walls to soundproof the recording booth works just as good. I would rather go this route because the foam padding is expensive and I need alot, but I just had my basement carpeted and I have extra carpet that would work perfectly and save me some money.

There are two types of "sound proofing".

Sound proofing usually refers to what you do to a room to keep the sound inside the room. If you don’t want to hear what is going on inside the room in the rest of the house, that would be sound proofing. Carpet will help a little bit with that but to do it the right way you need to build a sturdier wall. Thick, massive walls are best for sound proofing.

If you are trying to eliminate echos inside the studio, that is different than sound proofing. Acoustic foam on the wall is designed for that purpose but it does little to prevent sound from going through the walls. Carpet on the walls will help with echos somewhat. Anything to cut down on hard surfaces inside the studio will help.

There is some good stuff on studio acoustics here:

I don’t really know about recording studio, but a good starting point would be err…maybe a recording software.
