What sort of home recording equipment should I buy to record some of my songs?

Posted: March 10, 2010 – 4:30 am

I don’t have a PC (my flatmate’s got a laptop and that’s all), so what should I buy. Any good websites or brand names or whatever would be really appreciated.

Thanks

I bought a USB mic for my laptop – this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samson-Cakewalk-Music-Creator-software/dp/B000RMDGWA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1218639429&sr=8-1 because it comes with Cakewalk recording software. It works quite well, although in retrospect I wish I had bought this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samson-CO1U-USB-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B000AP1RE8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1218639429&sr=8-4 because I think there would be less ‘white noise’ in the background. But the one I have is really good as a starting point and it is helpful that it comes with the software. Good luck!

What is some good but also not so expensive recording equipment?

Posted: March 7, 2010 – 7:21 am

I’m in a two person band we just started and we’ve just been recording with a mp3 player.

Me and my friend were in the same boat. I used m-audio session, its like 40-50 bucks but it works really good. the sound quality is amazing for what it is and i can put the songs onto my ipod. it comes with an interface so you can only record one instrument at a time. I know garage band is really good too, if you have a mac book that works better.

Where can I get amateur recording equipment?

Posted: March 4, 2010 – 5:09 am

I have a Fostex multitrack recorder and though it’s stopped working, I never really knew how to use all that it really offered anyways. It was too complicated. I’m wanting to know a good place to look for old, used, affordable electronics, but I’m mainly looking for recording equipment. Tape decks, mixing equipment, etc. I just want to make music and also learn about what there is out there I can play with.

If you want an easy to use recorder that works great (I own one):

Posted: March 1, 2010 – 3:05 am

I wanted to record an upcoming TV news broadcast in which my company name is mentioned as well as an video clip of my company building will be aired. What equipment I shall use to record it live and in what format I can record it? We want to preserve this clips for our marketing department. TQ

Do you have a VCR? It’s a little quaint but it’s literally the best thing.

What is the best voice recording equipment for making audio books?

Posted: February 26, 2010 – 12:40 am

I’m not even sure whether I should get a digital dictaphone or a microphone straight onto the pc. I want something good quality as long as it’s value for money.
Thanks.

Chris – You should consider a simple USB microphone:

what home recording equipment and program would be best to hook up to a computer?

to record instuments and vocals and then put the layers together?
to record instuments and vocals and then put the layers together?
And how much would it cost?

You can download a program for free, it’s called Audacity. It does recording and editing. Free, easy to use, powerful, what more could you want?

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

To record instruments and voice you need a microphone. You can plug it into the ‘mic’ input of your computer, or into an amplifier of some sort (like a cassette deck or tape recorder) and then the ‘line out’ into the ‘line in’ port of your computer.

The thing is, you can only record one or two tracks at a time. But you could record, for instance, the piano, then play that back while you sing. You can layer as many tracks as you want this way, then do a ‘mix down’ in the program, adjusting the volume of each track and placing it in the stereo ‘image’.

You can buy hardware to record 8 tracks at a time, 8 different mics or input sources, and mix them on a big mixer board. That gets a bit expensive. To do it with Audacity, you only need a microphone. They are between $10 and $200.

What Is The Best Equipment to Get When You First Start Recording?

Posted: February 19, 2010 – 11:18 pm

I’ve been doing music for a while now, and I would really like to advance and have more equipment to record my own songs, instead paying for a recording studio to do it right now. I feel like it would save more money in the future if I had my own software and equipment.

A nice USB mic would be my first choice. With it you can record guitars, basses, vocals, and so on. You can record drums with it but it won’t be as nice as direct mics.
Look into a program called Audacity. It’s a freeware multitrack recording program. This should get you on your way to making good recordings.

What is the best and cheapest digital recording equipment?

Posted: February 16, 2010 – 8:37 pm

What type of digital recording equipment would you recommend? I will basically be recording an acoustic guitar, bass, banjo, and vocals. I would like something that can burn to cd or export to a computer. I would like something cheap but quality to record some demos.

There are many digital recorders out there. If you already have a mixer, you can use it to send a mix of everything to any small digital 2 channel recorder:

A digital mixer with 6 or so real simultaneous inputs is going to get expensive:
