I’ve recorded in a studio before but I’ve never used the equipment so I have no idea how to use it. I’m going to play around with it and figure it out. But What equipment do I need to buy for it? I know I need a microphone, headphones, mic stand, speakers and a cord to connect the recorder to my laptop (cause the recorder doesn’t have a cd input.)
Also I have a memory card: lexar media 256 MB.

i have a decent home studio that I am trying to expand. I was wondering what are some things that are essential to ensure sound quality in a studio? im not necessarily looking for serious professional quality, but just the closest I can get on a budget of around $1,000 more or less. I record (rock/pop) vocals, piano, guitar for the most part. here’s a list of my current equipment:

MacBook Pro (for recording)
Logic Studio
M-Audio ProFire 2626 (interface)
2 Mackie MR5 monitors
Roland FP-7
Fender Deluxe HSS Strat
Taylor 314
Blue Baby Bottle
SM-58
Sterling Audio ST-51

I don’t have any isolation material either

Murph. I think you SHOULD go for serious professional quality. Audio quality these days is not as much about the gear as it is about the knowledge and processes you use. Trust me when I say you have more than enough in your current studio to give you serious professional quality. The absolute most important thing you can do now to get better quality than what you’re getting (presumably you’re not that happy with it) is to pay VERY close attention to getting the cleanest tones/signal into the Mac as humanly possible, combined with a little bit of process know-how. For example, since you have no room treatments, close-mic everything to keep the room sound to a minimum. Also, don’t put any effects on anything (except maybe a limiter if you must) during tracking. Double-track your Taylor (I have a 314 too…LOVE it!) and pan hard left and right for big acoustic sound. Make maximum use of the stereo field (some things stereo and some things not! Spread them around), make minimum use of compression. In fact, if you don’t have a really good one, it is a good idea to "manually compress" the vocal using track envelopes. It takes longer, but you have total control and you’ll avoid the all-too-common nasty side effects of over-compression.

These tips should help. Oh, and I actually do have one suggestion for your next piece of gear. Get a small-diaphragm condenser such as the Sure SM-81. It RAWKS on the Taylor!

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Ken

I am looking to start at the very bottom of my recording ambition. Right now I have a Tascam dp-008 portastudio and I am looking to just start with a vocal editing software. I have been looking around and I found that Pro-Tools has a "Vocal Studio" version of their product and I know that Antares-Autotune requires Pro-tools to run. If I purchase just the vocal studio will I be able to run Antares? If anyone knows any information I would love to have your email so I can ask many more questions that I have. Thanks.

simply put……..yes.

feel free to email me but yes the vocal studio will run antares plug ins.

recently I’ve wanted to get into making beats but i have no idea what types of equipment are used, ive heard of the mpc 3000 and i know pianos are used, and in particular i want to make R&B beats i use FL studio but i cant find the sounds or the quality im looking for obviously i don’t have a professional studio but if anyone has any information on the kinds of equipment that are used it would be REALLY helpful and a full description of how to use them.

i got you

Keyboard – if you have a huge pocket book and dont mind putting out $2000 + for a keyboard then take a look at the roland fantom, korg m3, yamaha motif and other things. if youre a little short on change then try a midi keyboard like the m-audio axiom 49 ($250) or even lower m-audio keyrig49 – (
$100)

Audio Interface – this is what you connect things like microphones, guitars, and monitors to. take a look at the tascam us122 ($129) or check out some m-audio ones. the more expensive ones give you more spots to plug in mics and other stuff.

Monitors – (speakers) – do some research and figure out which one will give you the best mix. a lot of beginners use the KRK rokit 5s ($150 per speaker), but the more professional artists use a bunch like Yamahas or Mackies with a subwoofer.

DAW – (Digital Audio Workstation, the software) – you want to find a DAW that will do everything you want it to do. Protools is the industry standard, but there is a LOT to learn in it and people even take classes. Take a look at Sonar, Cubase, Reason, Logic (if you have a mac). I use FL Studio too and if you want to keep using that start looking into VST instruments to get better quality sounds.

Mixer – Optional

Mic – not really my area, but go to your local Guitar Center and ask them questions. they’re usually pretty good about helping you out, or you can go to sites like www.zzounds.com or guitarcenter.com and read what other people say about them.

hope this helped

check out my remix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEwTqzvqGyU

I would like to get into doing voice overs at some point professionally. Can anyone provide insight on what kind of inexpensive equipment I need to make voice overs from home to practice and develop?

It sounds like you are looking for a low-cost option to get your feet wet. If that is the case then I would recommend a USB condenser mic such as this:
http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/AudioTechnica-AT2020USB-USB-Condenser-Microphone?sku=272999&CJAID=10381297&CJPID=3838583

This connects to your computer via USB and provides the mic preamps, phantom power, and analog to digital conversion that you would usually need an Audio Interface for.

If you then decide this is something that you want to pursue, then you should make the investment in an Audio Interface. This one from PreSonus has a nice set of features for the price:
http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/PreSonus-AudioBox-USB?sku=243007&CJAID=10381297&CJPID=3838583

Once you have an Audio Interface your microphone selection goes through the roof. Instead of being limited to the USB mics you can choose from any one of hundreds of dynamic or condenser mics (though for voice-work I’d still recommend a condenser).

Good luck!

tascam dp01fx-digtal 8 track with a 40 gig hard drive, guitar effects(and it burns CDs), and phantom power. I’ve been using it for over a year and haven’t had any problems. Sounds just like a professional recording. I paid $799 when it first came out last year but I think they’re down to about $500 now. The only bad problem that it has is that it doesn’t have pitch control. Other than this you’d need an amp and monitor.
