studio equipment needed?

does anyone know where ic an get studio equipment for my son,his doin music tracks mainly that go on his my space but they record most days(dubbing he calls it) iv brought him a mixer for his 16th but his saying something about a condenser mic? but im wondering what else i might need to get it sounding top quality for him,

it would be helpful if you could post some more details though – what instruments does he record from? the condenser mic is for vocals i’m guessing but what other stuff do they play? or is the music made using his computer (if so – what softwared does he use – cubase? acid pro? stein’?) and also what sort of music does he do…and of course…the million dollar question…what do you want to spend!?!?

lol – that’s a solid enough deck at the price! needed to check cos you can spend many thousands of pounds(!) on a single condenser..i’d recommend something like the rv6 on this page – http://www.red5audio.com/acatalog/Condensor_Mics.html
but i see you can get it on ebay in a bundle with a pad, headphones(prob not so good) and a couple of other bits. it needs a 48v phantom power supply which i THINK your deck has but check it’s compatibility otherwise you’ll need an external one…you can spend less however and depending on how your lad records(i really don’t know that software!) will depend on whether it’s too much..still, this is a good enough mic to stand an upgrade elsewhere in his system – either mixer deck or soundcard(m-audio does some seriously yummy kit!)

other things you might want to consider are sound-absorbing panels which, to be honest, you can build yourself

i very rarely record external sources so all my investment has been in software that should cost several thousand(check your messages to see why it didn’t =)) and i only take a digital source from my pc and deal with that externally using dacs and amps i made/modified myself…if i was recording external sources i’d go m-audio and get one of these s/hand –

What kind of equipment do you need for a music recording studio?

we are thinking about building one in our basement.

tascam dp01fx-digtal 8 track with a 40 gig hard drive, guitar effects(and it burns CDs), and phantom power. I’ve been using it for over a year and haven’t had any problems. Sounds just like a professional recording. I paid $799 when it first came out last year but I think they’re down to about $500 now. The only bad problem that it has is that it doesn’t have pitch control. Other than this you’d need an amp and monitor.

I already have pre-recorded instrumental music (i.e. Karaoke-type stuff) and all I really want to do is just record my voice over the music…add some effects and stuff to fix it up a bit…and then save it to burn to a CD. All the programs I’ve tried, seem to be for people who can play instruments, or have some sort of knowledge of reading music and whatnot. I just want something easy to understand, that will give a nice sounding result.

Any suggestions????

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ not a bad free one.. cakewalk not too bad lots of available plugins.. if you have a creative sound card then the mediasource player that came with it works just fine.

It works quite well, although in retrospect I wish I had bought this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samson-CO1U-USB-Condenser-Microphone/dp/B000AP1RE8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1218639429&sr=8-4 because I think there would be less ‘white noise’ in the background. I’d like to purchase a laptop-using maxic studio on my computer at home and need a portable unit for my band-
however , I am reading where keyboards lock up on macs and their battery life is lower than advertised by hours.
What should I look for-hard drive-memory-etc-what is your experience- I would appreciate experienced input and thank you for it.

Apple’s release of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard appears to have brought with it battery drain and intermittent keyboard freezing issues, which are plaguing some MacBook and MacBook Pro owners. Numerous posts in Apple’s support forums for both notebooks detail an issue that essentially shuts down the keyboard at random intervals, and affected owners report having to restart or wake their systems if the problem doesn’t resolve itself in good time. Trackpads and external keyboards still function normally, however, as noted by AppleInsider.
Users attempting to correct the problem have gone so far as to reset the affected notebook’s PRAM (Parameter Random Access Memory) to no avail. Users also say they are still experiencing the problem on freshly-installed Macs, which effectively rules out third-party software as the culprit.

I’ve never had my keyboard lock up on my Macs and I’ve owned four of them. MacBook and MacBook Pro battery life is actually very good. It’s much better than any PC notebook that I’ve ever seen. For recording, you can’t beat a Mac. They come with Garageband, which has been good for my recording so far. Garageband is better than most of the recording software that I’ve used on PCs. If you do happen to need something more advanced, you also have Logic Express and Logic Studio. The best of the best. I’m sorry, but I would never recommend a PC for recording. The recordings I’ve been doing on my Mac sound so much better than recordings I’ve done on PCs.

Where to find loops in Sony ACID Music Studio?

I just got Sony ACID music studio, and it says on the Sony Creative Software website that ACID includes over 1,000 free loops to get me started, but I can’t find them in it. Do I have to download the loops or are they somewhere in the program?

Download those then use your Acid Navigation pane, usually at the bottom to navigate and preview the sounds. Then import the ones you want to use.

The answer to your question is first going to depend on whether or not you have a computer. Since I don’t know if you have a computer, I’ll outline a few different scenarios for you. Keep in mind, my suggestions are "cheap prices" as you requested. I assume you already have some headphones.

For each scenario I will recommend the same microphones. I have had extremely good luck with the Behringer B5 and B2 models. The B5 is a small condensor microphone perfect for micing instruments. It sells for under $100. The B2 is a large condensor microphone which works great for vocals. It sells for around $150.

Scenario 1: No computer

I would recommend an all-in-recorder such as the Yamaha AW16G. You can buy them used on eBay for around $300. It can recording 8 tracks at a time and play back 16. You can record, mix, add effects, and burn a CD.

AW16G = $300 used
B5 mic = $85
Total = $385

Scenario 2: You own a PC

First you’ll need some way to get the audio into your computer. This device is called an interface. I have had good luck with the Focusrite Saffire LE. It sells for around $220 on eBay. It can record up to six tracks at a time. Only two of those tracks have preamps though.

Next you’ll need recording software. Sonar is a great program. The home studio version costs about $100.

Focusrite = $220 used
Sonar = $100
B5 Mic = $85
Total = $405

Scenario 3: You own a Mac

For your audio interface, I still recommend the Focusite Saffire LE.

Newer Macs come with a program called Garageband. It is awesome and it is FREE.

Focusrite = $220 used
Garageband – Free
B5 Mic = $85
Total = $305

Lastly, there will be some hidden fees like mic cables, adaptors, extra mics, mic stands… These things can add up. But if you buy them one at a time, before you know it, you’ll have a rockin’ setup.

Untill I get to making an ebook on how I made this , this is my studio in a roadcase. I designed and built this mobile studio for personal music recording. I made this video to inspire others that they too can make this very useful midi studio aswell. This a Protools (Mbox2Pro) set up with an Apple Macbook 2hz. It works fantastic. Within this roadcase are my Yamaha Hs40 studio monitors, my microphones and their stands..generally all I’ll need to record crystal clear music . Inside as well I have installed a 1 TB hardrive.
