I have a Mac laptop and a Shure BETA 58A wireless mic but no soundboard, no pickup for the mic, no editing aside from garage band and iMovie. how can I make semi professional recordings of me and my guitar? I would love the ability to tweak my voice and remove any pitch imperfections but I know nothing about this. thanks!

Hi, I’m going to start recording my songs and a few cover songs in a recording studio. I’ve never recorded a song, nor been in a recording studio. Can someone break-down the process(es) of recording in a studio, how it works, and some tips. Thank you!

You are put in a soundproof booth and wear headphones. The recording engineer is just outside and you can see each other through a window. He/she plays the pre-recorded instrumental background music, you sing into a microphone, his mixer unit mixes the two together, you hear the combination through the headphones, and that’s what will be recorded. You may have to do several "takes" to get it right.

any suggestions?

If recording riffs is the extent of your intentions at the moment, then you’ll simply need a high impedance interface (A DI box) and an amp emulation program.

The other method would be micing a guitar cab, but that takes a lot more experience to get a good tone from, and it is louder as well. That would require more money as well, as you’ll need a microphone and an interface still.

Just stick with the first method. Line 6 has some pretty cheap solutions for this. Look into their guitar port products.

So I have been looking again at recording equipment but this time I’m looking to save up for something really nice that will do a good job, even though it will take me awhile. I want a recording device that I can plug mics, guitars and synths into that will produce a clean sound with no background buzz. I have a $300 portable recorder that has a buzzing in the background even when I plug directly into it and I don’t want that. I have found one product that from the review I’ve read sounds good, but I would like to know what you think of it and if you don’t think it’s a good product, maybe suggest one for me?

Another question I have is about synths. I’ve been playing around with electronic synths on FL Studio and mixing some interesting sounds. I’ve been thinking about getting a real synth though, but I have no idea what to really look for. Like do I want something like this:

One thing to try before you buy the Tascam multitrack – try using your recorder with the batteries (not on a power supply) – that may clean up the buzzing sound.

If not, that Tascam should work great.

There is a lot of overlap when it comes to keyboards and synths – your best bet is to go to music store that sells them and play around with them until you find one you like.

Where can I buy basic music studio equipment in the Philippines? I’m planning to build a small home studio. Where can I find pop filters, condenser or dynamic mics, sound cards,etc.?

There are several good music stores here, and you won’t have a hard time looking for them since you can find them in malls. The most common would be RJ Music Center, Lyric, JB Music, Behringer.

If you are after higher-end equipment, you can go to Perfect Pitch, Audiophile, Yamaha.

As for the basic equipment, it will depend on your set-up, but the most basic you need will be:
1-Mics
2-Mixer
3-Speakers, monitors, headphones
4-PC built for audio editing (would need a high-end soundcard, CD/DVD writer. Mac or PC won’t really matter)
5-Amplifiers
6-Don’t forget the cables

Trying to be straight and to the point here…

I want to start recording music and I have no clue on what I need. I want to record some guitar stuff, mainly acoustic, but a bit of rock as well (Dire Straits, Metallica, RCHP). I currently own a MacBook, a Fender CD60 (acoustic), an Epiphone LP Standard, a Little Martin LXME (electro-acoustic) and a Peavey Modelling amp. You can guess I’m not a fan of spending too much money…

Basically what software and hardware do I need to get started?

There are several programs you can use. You can do it all online at www.clubcreate.com, or you can use this program called Audacity or Jokosher, both of which are free. There are paid for programs with more features, as well.

I would like to know the main advantages and disadvantages as to having a recording studio in my home or having a whole building for recording.

There need be no difference if the home studio is properly set up.

By the way, very few professional studios are located in buildings by themselves. The studio only needs enough space for the performers and equipment. Nin fact, the smaller the space, the easier it is for sound engineers to control the quality of the recording.
