Recording Nirvana: Drain You (Butch Vig Breaks It Down In The Studio)

http://www.MixMyMusic.net – My favorite Nirvana song, and the best video clip yet. Butch Vig deconstructs the song Drain You. Like the other videos, this is one is of him behind the console in the studio soloing out sections of the song and talking about how they made the record. Tip of the hat to “Classic Albums” & EagleRock Entertainment. If you’re in a band or into recording, please visit our website http://www.mixmymusic.net. We provide professional music mixing services to bands & artists. -Rob

    @EthanBackToLifeMETAL A producer is an artist too. Many times it’s a producer’s creative vision that will make or break a band. Just as there will be creative differences between musicians in the same band, there will be creative differences between the band and the producer, and the producer and the engineer(s), etc. That “chemistry” is part of what makes for creative and enjoyable music, and not just one person’s singular vision, remarkable as it may be.

    @PBANDSNOW Without Butch “lying” to Kurt, none of us would have ever heard of him, or Nirvana. It’s his “lies” that gave the band the success they deserved.

    I don’t think the …
    I don’t think the overdubbing and double triple tracking changed the sound of the band here. It made them sound a bit fatter. by ‘93 they sounded very close to this in terms of big guitar sound…jmo the biggest things were Andy Wallace’s compression tricks he triggers off of the kick and bass guitar. Thats could potentially ‘change’ the sound but it doesn’t make the band sound molested.

    I may sound dumb, but I never knew how producing a song works.
    Looks complicated, but very interesting, I’d love to do it.
    It would be bad if they released instrumentals for Nirvana’s tracks.

    @SimonS7r erm… …
    @SimonS7r erm… your comment was everywhere and you included a lot of questions that seemed to not be questions… or rather questions that didn’t make sense…

    also, keep in mind, nirvana is a band of 3 members, but they did have touring members, and that’s quite common in alot of bands.

    also, double tracking is done to make the sound fuller, but it is possible to “replicate” by splitting the audio feed into multiple amps/preamps/pedals via a 1/4 splitter cable. it’s actually not uncommon.

  20. SimonS7r Says:

    @TheHikoriOne: So …
    @TheHikoriOne: So overdubbing is then a very natural process if you have a band of 3 members. During a guitar solo the rhythm guitar has to remain. I am not against this kind of stuff. If you say Bleach is overdubbed you mean double tracked like on Nevermind or overdubbed like every rock album? I think double tracking is legitim, as long as it doesn’t change the actual sound of the band, wich it does here in my opinion.

  21. TheHikoriOne Says:

    @Jmako7 boring or …
    @Jmako7 boring or not, sound engineering has nothing to do with being entertaining or eccentric, also he’s not very boring. the only SLIGHTLY boring thing about him is his voice. it has mainly to do with capturing the sound properly so the mixing and mastering processes could go smoothly, that way there are less retakes needed if any. A good sound engineer does these things right the first time. wanna hear bad sound engineers, listen to the rhcp early albums. I love the band but the albums suck.

  22. TheHikoriOne Says:

    thing is, it’s not …
    thing is, it’s not really overdubbing, it’s more like double tracking, because overdubbing is when it’s playing different parts, doubling the track is how you make a song sound much thicker, it’s done REALLY OFTEN in guitar.

    side note,the bleach sound IS overdubbed a little.

  23. loombaron Says:

    what a key video …
    what a key video this is, I mean Kurt double-tracked almost all his vocals in the album. Now I know shy his voice sounds so powerful in the record . jajaj
