Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers questions from off of his Guitar Blog website…
Q). I’d like to know more about building a music room, especially soundproofing and acoustics of a room?
- Caleb – Davenport, Iowa.
A). I’d like to clarify the difference between room acoustics & soundproofing because these are two different things. Keep in mind that just because you build a soundproof room, there’s no guarantee that you’ll have good sound in that room. On the flip-side, it’s also possible to build a great sounding room that your next-door neighbor will hate you for every time you decide to do some jamming. Let’s begin with sound-proofing, because this one has a lot to do with how much money you have to spend on a room. Sound-proofing essentially costs a great deal of money to do because you need to have a good amount of density and it costs quite a lot of money to create say a 14″ thick wall of various materials such as; lead-lined sheetrock, concrete, and say perhaps a room floating on resilient channeling, etc. Once you start the soundproofing process, it may feel like your architect or contractor is using 50 dollar bills to soundproof your room! On the acoustics side, most modern rooms are not pillow dead. They typically have dampening in the corners to avoid bass build-up, and they will also tend to use some sound diffusers to control the amount of “liveness” in a room without drying it out. Listening room acoustics can be controlled in a fairly lo-cost way with Acoustic dampeners from companies such as; RPG Diffusers, Auralex or Primacoustic. A kit of diffuser panels will do wonders for a recording studio and won’t break your bank account!
